Ellison Outfits New York by Gehry with Custom Balanced Doors

Doors Complement Building’s Unconventional Design

Publish Date: Thursday, April 10, 2014

FALCONER, N.Y…Ellison Bronze, Inc., the inventor of the balanced door and provider of the highest-quality marquee entrances in the industry, offers its custom door systems to New York by Gehry at 8 Spruce Street in New York City. The stainless steel doors offer a timeless appeal that complements the building’s grand architecture, while providing unmatched durability.

New York by Gehry is the first New York City residential commission for architect Frank Gehry. Rising 870 feet above lower Manhattan, the 76-story building is one of the tallest residential towers in the Western Hemisphere. Gehry reinterpreted the traditional New York high rise and the structure stands out against neighboring buildings with its distinctive exterior façade. The skyscraper features curved stainless steel cladding that resembles vertical ripples, making it an iconic addition to the New York City skyline.

New York by Gehry contains three single custom Ellison balanced doors at the main lobby entrance. Each door features stile and rail construction of stainless steel material, type 316 with satin finish—providing a transparent aesthetic for the glass-enclosed lobby. One door unit includes Ellison PowerNow power operation functionality, facilitating optimal access for all users.

“Ellison Bronze provided great service and a high-quality, custom product that met the project's specifications,” Adam Asparro, project manager, S&C Products Corp. “The balanced doors arrived on site in perfect condition and the installation of the doors was seamless. The project team is very happy with the balanced doors and they have been functioning without any problems.”

Like New York by Gehry, Ellison balanced doors are stunning in appearance and high-performing. While Ellison balanced doors consist of sturdy components, the heavy and durable doors can still be opened with ease due to their construction and hinging hardware. A balanced door features an inset pivot point at two-thirds the width of the door, creating a balance that distributes the weight so the door requires little force to open. The inset balancing point allows for an easier open force, even against external winds and internal building stack pressure.

“Ellison balanced door systems are often specified for high-profile buildings because of their style and longevity,” says Mark Graves, president of Ellison. “Our doors are constructed from durable and beautiful materials that allow them to withstand high traffic over a long period of time. New York by Gehry is a distinguished structure and we are proud that Ellison doors facilitate access to the building.”

Unlike conventional entry doors, an Ellison formed-up door features a solid sub-frame, which is made of minimum .09-inch thick material. The external door skins are spot welded at close intervals to the internal channel components, yielding an extremely durable unitized construction. Due to their superior craftsmanship, Ellison doors have a long lifespan while enduring to New York’s hot summers, cold winters and demanding inhabitants.

The Ellison entry doors lead into the lobby featuring Gehry’s signature honey-colored horizontal grain Douglas Fir walls and a Gehry-designed, organic-shaped concierge desk. New York by Gehry’s exterior folds creates 200 unique apartment floor plans and panoramic views. Gehry selected all the interior finishes and fixtures for the residences. Residents of New York by Gehry have access to 22,000 square feet of health, wellness, entertainment, social and outdoor amenity spaces.

New York by Gehry opened in 2011. The project team consisted of owner/developer Forest City Ratner Companies, Brooklyn, NY, architect Gehry Partners, LLP, Los Angeles, general contractor Kreisler Borg Florman General Construction Company, Scarsdale, NY, storefront contractor S&C Products Corp., New York and Ellison representative Mackenzie Door Company, New York.
